TANZANIA SAFARI VEHICLES AND EQUIPMENT
Planning your Tanzania safari adventure? One of the most important details to consider before booking your safari is understanding what vehicles are used. At Spectra Tours Tanzania, we maintain a modern fleet of specially equipped safari vehicles designed to maximize your wildlife viewing experience while ensuring your safety and comfort throughout Tanzania’s diverse landscapes.
Our fleet is comprehensive and versatile, ranging from intimate walking safaris to premium 4x4s accommodating 4 to 7 passengers. Whether you prefer budget-friendly adventures or air-conditioned luxury experiences, we offer everything from local dugout mokoros for wetland exploration to scenic flights in light aircraft for bird’s-eye views of Tanzania’s spectacular wilderness. The key is choosing the vehicle combination that perfectly suits your preferences for the ultimate Tanzania safari experience.
All Spectra Tours Tanzania safari vehicles are robust 4WD Land Cruisers and Land Rovers. 4WD capability is essential for safaris in Tanzania’s remote areas, especially during rainy seasons and when navigating challenging terrain like the steep descent into Ngorongoro Crater or the black cotton soil plains of Serengeti during wet conditions.
4WD is also crucial for accessing prime wildlife viewing locations that standard vehicles cannot reach. For your Tanzania safari, we exclusively use these rugged and reliable vehicles equipped with game drive features. Our well-maintained fleet ensures you reach the most remote and spectacular game viewing areas safely and comfortably.
Our Land Cruisers are specifically outfitted for Tanzania safari tours, ranging from essential ‘no-frills’ models to highly specialized vehicles featuring air-conditioning, charging ports, and tinted windows for sun protection. Many of our newer Land Cruisers also feature pop-up roofs for enhanced viewing opportunities, particularly valuable when observing Tanzania’s incredible wildlife.
Each vehicle includes a small refrigerator for cold drinks and snacks during long game drives, making your safari experience more comfortable as you explore Tanzania’s vast national parks.
For optimal wildlife viewing during your Tanzania safari, you’ll stand and observe through the vehicle’s pop-up roof hatch. If mobility is a concern, all our vehicles feature large sliding windows, though these may be smaller on some models.
Important note: Most safari vehicles in Tanzania are equipped with internal metal framing that can obstruct movement within the vehicle and wildlife photography. Enclosed vehicles can become quite warm without air conditioning, especially during Tanzania’s hot seasons. However, our enclosed vehicles offer the advantage of small refrigerators for refreshments, and reduced road dust compared to open safari vehicles.
SEATING ARRANGEMENT
These vehicles, in general, can carry four to six (extended version) passengers, all forward-facing. Check the seating configuration with your tour operator before booking. While the extended vehicles can carry more people, they tend to be slightly more difficult to handle on the road. Most of the Land Cruisers are 4X4s, allowing travel over the rough terrain that Africa is known for… Have a look at images of the road into the Ngorongoro Crater if you want an idea!
While self-hire options are available, tour operators all have experienced drivers who, more-often-than-not have extensive knowledge not only of handling the rough terrain, but of the areas through which we travel.
Safety First!
Most Land Cruisers are equipped with all possible safety features – fire extinguishers, First Aid kits, seat belts and many have air bags. They have specially-designed fuel tanks to allow economical use of diesel during long journeys and snorkels for travel through rivers.
Luggage space & how to pack (light)
In general, luggage is taken either in a trailer, or packed on the roof, to keep the vehicle as uncluttered as possible inside, for your comfort. Remember to pack lightly!
